Self-Defeating
GOP
The Election That Lost Itself
By D.W.
The Democrats now control the House of Representatives with ultra
liberal Nancy Pelosi as the new speaker of the House, third in line
for the Presidency. And they also have the Senate.
Who do we have to blame for this fiasco?
Why the Republican Party of course!
The Democrats didn’t win as much as the Republican’s lost. Maybe the
GOP should have been more conservative and not upset their base as
much.
As for myself, I didn’t vote in protest, but of course my district
is a safe seat so I wasn’t risking much.
The Republican Party had squandered a historic opportunity to really
push a conservative agenda and take the country down a great path.
If they had listened to their base they could have focused on
securing the border and intelligently dealing with the illegal
immigration issue. If they listened to their base they would have
been better able to control wasteful government spending.
And without promoting a viable energy policy, the big oil companies
astronomically hiked up gasoline prices, which angered just about
everyone.
The Republican’s have even abandoned their role as guardians of
national security on a number of issues. They should have taken a
hard line against the Dubai ports deal, which is something I am
certain that we are going to regret later on. The deal angered
average Americans who were paying attention because the thought of
foreigners, let alone Arabs, controlling such vital infrastructure
is simply appalling. The Republicans were asleep at the wheel on
this issue when they should have towed the conservative line.
Allowing Denny Hastert to be the speaker of the house was also a bad
idea as he was obviously not the best choice. His lack of moral
leadership over the Mark Foley debacle and his dubious business
dealings undermined his credibility. Lets be honest, he just doesn’t
inspire confidence and their were plenty of other good candidates
out there.
The GOP needs to do a better and more consistent job of policing
their ranks internally. The party must conduct aggressive audits of
the office holder’s affairs to identify and intervene in morally
questionable behavior early on.
But more to the point, the party should never allow an office holder
to be outed by the liberal press. The same goes for candidate
selection, a Republican nominee doesn’t need to have a perfect past,
but his recent behavior must be morally sound.
The Jack Abramoff scandal was also completely avoidable and
Republicans who deal with scum like him aren’t real conservatives.
Republicans would be well advised to shun lobbyists as much as
possible and focus more on moral purity. Phony religious
conservatives like Ralph Reed should be consistently identified and
ousted from conservative movements. Christian Evangelicals who
constitute much of the Republican base are genuinely angered by
phony leaders who pay lip service to faith but fail to follow
through.
The GOP must also remember that they don’t have control over the
liberal media who will attack them at every available opportunity
while giving the Democrats a big pass all of the time. The best way
to counteract this is too maintain high moral standards and not
present themselves as credible targets for scandal.
The Republican Party also acted like a bunch of pansies by waving
off scandalous Democratic politicians when they should have attacked
them as viciously as the liberals attacked Tom Delay.
What has really happened with liberal congressman William Jefferson
with bribe money stuffed in his freezer?
I really haven’t heard anything about him lately even though his
actions are in fact a big deal. He should have been demonized
instead of protected by House speaker Hastert and other Republicans.
The Democratic Party has the real culture of corruption but nobody
is really pushing this fact out to the public.
The Democrats claim they won because the country wanted to go in a
new direction and this may be so.
Of course they certainly aren’t going to lead us into the new
direction we want; just the same old socialist and secular
progressive agenda they believe in. They will pay lip service to
national security but in the end, like many of the Republican’s in
Congress, they are more concerned about power and wealth than doing
what is actually best for the country.
The question to ask now is how can the Republican Party recover from
this mess will and counter the all but certain Clinton and Obama
ticket in 2008.
If the Democrats control the Presidency and Congress in 2008, there
will be no going back. We will evolve into another form of a
European welfare society and China will establish its role as the
global hegemony, which it is very much ready and willing to do.
