Caught With Her Panties Down

The paparazzi will take pictures of just about anything, especially
if you are famous and a celebrity. And they will take pictures of
what you are wearing and what you are not covering up.
So while pop superstar Britney Spears was hanging around with
newfound friend and socialite Paris Hilton, both were spotted
partying together at many hip nightclubs which attracted hordes of
photographers. Of course, beautiful starlets love to wear short
dresses and short skirts which often reveal their panties. As a
result, the paparazzi snapped photographs of the panties Britney
wore underneath a leopard print dress.
Although photographs taken of underwear from an up-skirt view of
beautiful celebrities is nothing new but Britney’s pictures still
roared through the Internet and was thoroughly discussed among the
chattering classes. However, it was the subsequent photographs of
Britney not wearing any panties at all that really raised eyebrows,
including those Hollywood insiders who thought they had seen it all.
Typically, when a movie star or pop singer goes panty-less in front
of a lot of cameras, it is usually because of a big contract worth
lots of money for a photo spread in something like Playboy along
with the enormous publicity and wild sensation it creates. But for a
celebrity to spontaneously flash her bare privates to the public for
free has all the indications of someone screaming for attention.
But Britney Spears isn’t the only starlet that has been caught with
her panties down. Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan have also been
photographed numerous times wearing no panties underneath their
skimpy outfits. In fact, Lohan was photographed panty-less four
times in less than 60 days.
Celebrity observer and blogger Perez Hilton has this to say about
Spears:
"She wants the
picture taken. She wants the publicity. She wants people talking
about her. That's what people love to see more than anything. Why do
you think celebrity sex tapes sell so well?"
And her comments about Lohan:
"You'd think she'd either
wear pants or panties, or be more careful about how she exits a car.
Four times. That's no accident. That's deliberate."

So even if
celebrities are intentionally going panty-less for attention and
notoriety, the kind of coverage that they are getting for what is
not being covered is not exactly generating the media hype that they
are expecting. Devoted fans of Britney Spears are outraged and upset
because her panty-less antics are making her look cheap and seedy
instead of sexy and glamorous. In addition, there are plenty of fans
who feel that such indiscretions are publicity stunts that do
nothing to help build up her celebrity status; they just see it as
desperation.
Of course, there will always be plenty of people on the Internet who
want to see for themselves what Britney Spears, Paris Hilton,
Lindsey Lohan, and others look like without their underwear on. But
as fans have feared, these people will see these girls more as
pariahs who have no class instead of genuine fashionable superstars.
And outside of her fan base, there is also a part of the public that
will laugh at Britney (like me) and ridicule her while others will
find her behavior tasteless and tacky.
Although I do find it rather ironic, if not twisted, that her
devoted fans do not object at all when she is naked on the cover of
a magazine or is hardly wearing anything while performing on a
stage. Perhaps that is the appeal that so many people clamor for;
that is, seeing her in a sexy and glamorous context. However, her
fans now think of her as being cheap and seedy if she is
photographed without wearing any panties while partying?
That doesn’t make any sense to me. I think it is quite perverse for
people to think that it is okay if Britney is actually getting paid
money to take her clothes off in front of a camera but flashing her
panty-less crotch is supposed to be wrong. But then again I suppose
fickle fans have a tabloid view of what they feel normalcy is.
However, what is troubling about Britney and company is what they
will have to do in today’s environment in order to continue to get
the attention they crave. That means that celebrities will have to
be more outrageous and push the envelope even further in hopes of
creating the buzz that will keep the public talking.
So in order to accomplish that, does it mean that there are going to
be more celebrity sex tapes as movie stars and pop singers try to
top each other for more notoriety? Will they have to drop their
panties (provided they are wearing any) and relieve themselves
outside of a nightclub or vomit in a parking lot?
In fact, even when the envelope is pushed beyond the limit to where
it is really tacky, will anyone take notice? And will people even
care about it?
