War in
Korea?
More Inane Banter from Kim Jong Il
By D.W.
North Korea, under the divine leadership of the dear leader Kim Jong
Il, has recently threatened South Korea and the United States with
a preemptive invasion in response to routine military exercises held
on the Korean peninsula. Jon Herskovitz of the Reuters news wire
reported that, “North Korea said it had the right to launch a
pre-emptive attack to counter a U.S.-South Korean joint military
training drill”.
This regime feels that these annual and well publicized training
events are aggressive provocations even though they are defensive
rehearsals for a Northern attack.
So what! More of the usual blaaah blaaah blaah childish talk from
our erstwhile enemies in the northern Korean peninsula. But why does
the public and the media take these repetitive and meaningless
warnings seriously?
The North Korean regime has been spewing out this nonsense for fifty
years, making childish threats they will never actually carry out.
This probably makes them to feel important and powerful; oh the West
is quaking in their boots, just look at their newspapers. In
essence, they behave like little unruly children threatening to
break something if their parents don’t give them what they want. And
sadly, the press is feeding this narcissism by consistently
publishing these bogus warnings that they make on a tried and true
regular basis.
I am not saying that we should not take North Korea’s nuclear
program or support for terrorism seriously, because we must. But the
likelihood of a communist invasion of South Korea is extremely
doubtful since that it is not the real danger.
South Korea has a very strong and well trained military which could
probably defeat the North by itself. They have fifty divisions and
modern military equipment and they are defended in well prepared
positions while they continuously execute well rehearsed battle
drills.
The North can cause severe damage to the South but it cannot destroy
it. An invasion of the South would only guarantee that North Korea
would ultimately be destroyed.
And even the use of chemical weapons by the North would open up the
very likely possibility of a U.S. Nuclear attack, which would
annihilate the country.
The dear leader may be a Looney Toon but I don’t believe he is
suicidal. I am sure that in the deep recesses of his mind as well as
the minds of his generals he knows that they would be destroyed by
the South and by the United States. I could be wrong here as Saddam
Hussein actually believed he would survive a U.S. invasion as he
bought all the stupidity that his advisors told him. Kim Jong Il
might fall into the same trap of believing in his own invincibility
because everyone in the North tells him exactly what he wants to
hear.
Regardless of these developments, our military probably ignores
these foolish threats from the North because there are many other
more legitimate warning signs that are reliable indicators of an
attack. Thus, we still should not entertain the North’s intimidation
and bullying.
We do need to be worried about the things North Korea is not talking
about like their WMD’s and links to other undesirable nations and
terror groups. This is where they pose a real threat to us.
If North Korea can attack us through a proxy groups like Iran
attacking Israel, then that is the optimal course of action.
Our so called friends in China and Russia are not immune to this
threat either. It is not a far stretch from having a nuke sold to
Al-Qaeda ending up in Chechen hands. There is no honor among
homicidal terror groups. One day they can be your allies and then
stab you in the back on the next day if it serves their purpose.
Luckily it is easy for us to further isolate this regime from the
rest of the world if that becomes necessary. North Korea only
borders two countries; the South and China. The only other way of
accessing the country is by air and sea, both of which can be
blockaded with international support. The wild card here is China
which probably has numerous reasons for both containing North Korea
and as well as for enabling their capacity for causing problems.
Consequently, the North Korean dilemma is more diplomatic than it is
militarily especially since a military solution could only result in
total war.
And most importantly, North Korea is far from autonomous; they can’t
even feed their own population. This creates severe vulnerabilities
that can be exploited to our advantage by further isolating the
regime. An effective blockade would largely eliminate the threat of
physically transferring weapons to terror groups but it would not
eliminate a transfer of knowledge.
So if the media is going to sensationalize the North Korean problem
they should focus on threats that actually exist and stop
entertaining North Korean propaganda.
Kim Jong Il, as well as other world leaders, is reportedly is a
frequent viewer of our media sources, where he probably is satiated
by all the news reports of his public threats that scare Western
nations. No doubt that it is these news reports that are responsible
for allowing him to feel important thus encouraging him to continue
this undesirable behavior. Perhaps he hopes that these threats of
invasion will detract the West from the real threat that he poses
with his nuclear program.
