Secular Triumphs
Liberals are AWOL on Secularism
By Daniel Muniz
Oftentimes, the Democratic Party describes
itself as the party of peace, civil liberties, and secularism; or at
the very least, those are the proclivities of much of the leadership
of the party. And few can dispute that secularism has been the
driving force behind the impetus of many special interest groups in
alliance with the Democrats such as the ACLU, MoveOn.org, NOW, etc.
In contrast, George W. Bush is often depicted by these groups as
the bible thumping, brimstone spewing demagogue who wants to impose
theocratic rule on America and perhaps on the rest of the world. And
you don’t have to look very hard to find vicious literature and
caricatures that elucidate this point of view.
However, unacknowledged by liberals and the mainstream media,
George W. Bush has done more for promoting secularism than all the
combined efforts of peace activists, atheists, and agnostics put
together.
For instance, Afghanistan was once a hotbed of
theocratic rule, domestically by the Taliban and internationally by
the al-Qaida network. Today, the Taliban has been pulverized and
what is left of al-Qaida is confined to caves in isolated mountain
ranges.
In Iraq, our armed forces confront and defeat
the jihadist terrorists on a daily basis.
And overall, our military along with the
intelligence community and its Allied partners have done a
remarkable job in fighting terror across the world while putting an
end to organizations who seek to establish theocratic rule. Yet, the
media is strangely silent about many of these accomplishments unless
it can report American troops who have been bloodied by a skirmish.
But these types of theocrat terrorists that the press and
liberals conveniently ignore are thugs. They kill indiscriminately.
They have a very narrow view of the world and of the concept of
freedom other than in the context of radical Islam.
And sadly, the media continues to refrain in accurately and
comprehensively report the often barbaric nature of these terrorists
unless it can be done in a sensational context such as a beheading
or part of a massacre. And oftentimes as a way to imply of a failure
of our intervention instead of reporting the tremendous success
already accomplished.
And the only reaction Democrats can muster is
sympathy and commiseration for these same terrorists and especially
for their religious beliefs. Apparently, it is the same liberals who
have no problem upsetting Christians by using incendiary and
inflammatory rhetoric against them. And that makes this hypocrisy
all the more unsettling because George W. Bush is doing an
incredible job for promoting secularism and pluralism especially in
parts of the world where it did not really exist.
Unfortunately, the president will not get
credit for these far reaching results until probably after his death
in much the same way Ronald Reagan got his kudos for confronting
communism and in helping end the Cold War.
But the price of freedom does come at a very
steep price. When dealing with organizations that have an appetite
for violence, there is no way to negotiate with them unless it is in
the form of appeasement. And even appeasement does not last long as
history has shown us time and time again.
Has it been easy?
Absolutely not!
But it was already foretold that the war against terror and
oppression will take years. Admittedly, this bickering about Iraq
and terror is strictly out of partisanship. If Bill Clinton or Al
Gore had been waging this war, Democrats would be singing a
different tune as they had done in Kosovo.
But partisanship, regardless of party is blatantly wrong! And
Republicans are just as wrong when they commit the same offenses
during a Democratic administration especially because our troops are
still the same troops regardless of which party is in power.
And let's hope that Bush's secular triumphs
continue. Each victory provides more fertile ground for more
democracies to emerge.
