Bogus Doctor
Offering Free Breast Exams
By Daniel Muniz
At the time, Philip Winikoff was a 76 year old retired medical
doctor who embarked on a humanitarian mission to increase awareness
for breast cancer. This is a very noble cause especially since
breast cancer has stricken millions of women in this country. But
instead of using the traditional outlets to promote awareness to the
masses of this terrible disease, Winikoff utilized a highly limited
but very personal approach.
He went door-to-door offering free breast exams to women.
Now does this tactic sound a little fishy?
It should be because Philip Winikoff isn’t a doctor.
He is a dirty old man who preyed on unsuspecting women. While toting
around a black doctor’s bag, Winikoff sported the demeanor of a
concerned professional with the intention of passing himself off as
a legitimate physician in order to fool his victims so he could
satisfy his sick perversions.
The pervert ran his scam in Lauderdale Lakes of Broward County which
is part of the South Florida metropolitan area. He figured that the
worst thing that could happen to him was that women would say no to
his offer. And apparently, quite a few households coldly rejected
his philanthropic mission.
Two women in their thirties fell for his sleazy scheme.
Philip Winikoff
Each victim found what appeared to be a very nice
old man standing at their front door who claimed to be a doctor in
the area performing free breast exams. The women took the bait
because they felt that this was a genuine and valid offer so they
allowed the scumbag into their respective homes.
This lowlife degenerate was more than happy to thoroughly examine
the breasts of his compliant women.
But what gave this ruse away was that Winikoff didn’t stop with only
feeling these women’s boobs. This sick man reached his hand down
into their panties and sexually assaulted them.
In each incident, after the sexual contact the pervert ran off and
each woman called the cops.
The police promptly arrested Winikoff and the dirty old man was
slapped with several felony charges.
They also searched the nearby neighborhoods to determine whether or
not there were other women may have been duped by his scheme but
were too humiliated and horrified to contact law enforcement.
Sadly, despicable scams like this are a part of the dark nature of
humanity.
Many hucksters often use ploys that seem plausible on the surface
even though they are part of something outrageous. But it is this
credible façade that persuades the victims to lower their defenses.
And if people are willing to become accepting of a bogus
explanation, then they are willing to ignore the obvious even when
it means doing something that is obviously far-fetched and
incredible.
And once that happens, they can be had.
On the surface, it does seem ridiculous that a total stranger can
knock on a woman’s door and she then voluntarily allows him to
examine her boobs.
But people fall for scams all the time. It is not really all that
unusual.
For example, the Nigerian letter hoax is absolutely absurd. It is
preposterous to think that some foreign national with an
unpronounceable last name is going to contact you by email and then
be willing to hand over millions of dollars into your bank account.
All you have to do is provide this person that you have never met
with detailed personal information about yourself as well as your
confidential financial secrets.
Unfortunately, too many people fell for that scam and got their bank
accounts emptied out.
It doesn’t mean that all of these people were stupid. Okay, maybe
some of them were idiots but most of the victims were sensible
ordinary people. However, for a shenanigan to work, people have to
be willing to do what is commonly known among literary types as a
“suspension of disbelief.” That incessantly happens because we as a
society enjoy watching movies or television as well as reading a
good book. If it didn’t work, then nobody would go to the movies or
watch TV because we would too cynical to accept a story’s plot.
Everybody needs to have a sense of skepticism for the world we live
in. But even so, if we somehow ignore the obvious, then anybody can
be hoodwinked.
