Companies that Break the Law
By Daniel Muniz
I was watching a news show about illegal immigration on one of the
cable news channels. There was this one part where a group of Minute
Men who were at an observation post at the border were being
interviewed. One of them commented with a gaping mouth that we are
being invaded.
There is absolutely no doubt that illegal aliens are streaming into
the United States by sneaking across our border. Right now there are
approximately 12 million illegal immigrants in this country plus
hundreds of thousands of “anchor babies” who are American citizens
because they were born here.
But what I do find so disturbing are the naïve reactions by certain
people who oppose illegal immigration.
They look at the video footage or even see illegal border crossings
first hand and jump to the conclusion that America is being invaded.
I look at similar video tapes and arrive to the conclusion that
these same illegal aliens are being “invited” to the United States.
People who are illegally here in this country are not tourists. They
are not here to see the Empire State Building or to drive across the
Golden Gate Bridge or go to any other tourist attraction. They are
here to find the plentiful and easily available jobs. So in other
words, this is not an invasion but an invitation from tens of
thousands of companies.
Yet, a number of right-wingers and those who oppose illegal
immigration refuse to accept that premise.
Many of them would rather create fanciful conspiracy theories about
how Mexico is going to annex our southwestern states or waste their
time trying to enact silly laws that prevent illegal aliens from
renting apartments, etc.
Don’t get me wrong. I commend the Minute Men and other such groups
for bringing national attention to this chronic problem. I
personally felt that it couldn’t be done but I was wrong. I thought
that our politicians from both parties had successfully swept this
problem under the rug so that there would be no backlash. After all,
Spanish is very quickly becoming the second official language of the
United States. Now illegal immigration is in the forefront of
issues.
But the problem with groups like the Minute Men is that their scope
is far too limited because they focus is on the wrong problem.
Why not go straight to the source of the “invasion” and solve it
there, which happens to be the businesses that hire illegal aliens.
Instead of having a gaping mouth at footage of illegal aliens
crossing the border, why not have that same bewilderment at the
millions of illegal workers who are currently employed. Instead of
camping out at the border, why not camp out on the sidewalks of the
mansions of the business owners who are hiring illegal aliens,
provided that you can get inside of their gated communities.
I do not oppose border security because we need a fence and
practical security measures. What I do oppose is the inordinate
attention on our border when the problem is right here with
employers. As long as the jobs are available, illegal aliens will
continue to come to this country by the millions. But if they are
unable to find a employment, they are not going to stay here for
very long.
But right now enforcement of our labor laws is a joke.
For example, the employment agency Port Fabricators in Brownsville
Texas recruited hundreds of illegal aliens for their contract with
Keppel AmFELS. The company was slapped with a 15-count indictment.
However, their attorneys managed to finagle a deal in which criminal
charges were dropped in exchange for a six-figure fine. So in other
words, even though they were caught red handed, the owners of this
agency are not going to spend a single day in jail.
That is outrageous. The owners and mangers should be in prison doing
hard time. Instead, by paying a small sum of money, they can walk
away from a crime. But this happens all the time.
In fact, there are business organizations who are brazenly promoting
the use of illegal labor.
Instead of the ACLU, coalitions of business groups file lawsuits on
behalf of illegal immigrants. One example is in Arizona where a
lawsuit was filed to halt the enforcement of a new state law that
requires companies to verify the legal working status of applicants.
The business community is shelling out a lot of money to stop the
enforcement of this one immigration law but these kinds of lawsuits
are happening all over the country.
The ACLU doesn’t have to spend a dime to defend illegal aliens
because these business organizations are more than willing to do it
for them.
For the people who oppose illegal immigration, it is time to stop
blaming the illegal aliens and start focusing on the scumbag
businesses that hire them.
It is inexcusable that these owners and managers are not sitting in
a prison cell or sharing a shower stall with Big Bubba. Instead,
they are flouting our nation’s laws, currying favor with powerful
politicians, and financing frivolous lawsuits. In my point of view,
these white collar criminals are no different than the lowlife
degenerates in orange jumpsuits. For those who oppose illegal
immigration, it is time to start looking at those in the business
community who break the law in the same light.
