Sexually Explicit Clothes at School

When it comes to clothing, school districts have always put teenage girls under the microscope. The dress codes of numerous public schools have always banned the display of flesh such as cleavage and tops that reveal too much skin as well as skirts and dresses that show too much leg. The policies have also restricted the display of undergarments such as the t-backs of thongs and g-strings that protrude above low rise pants to form a whale tail as well as wearing clothes that are too tight or transparent.

For decades, certain girls have tried to push the envelope on how much skin they can bare but for the most part, school districts are simply unwilling to budge.

But today, young girls have found a novel way to circumvent the dress codes while titillating the opposite sex. In fact, they don’t have to show any skin at all because they can simply wear t-shirts with messages printed on them that are blatantly sexual. Examples are:

● Two Boys for Every Girl
● Your Boyfriend is a Good French Kisser
● Your Boyfriend Wants Me
● If You Think I'm Beautiful, Wait till You See Me Naked
● I Know What Boys Want
● Flirting My Way to the Top

And there are plenty of other suggestive examples that are even more explicit.

Of course, provocative shirts have always been around but for the longest time they were usually worn by boys. When I was in high school back in the eighties, I remember the Mr. Zogs Sex Wax shirt that was en vogue at the time. Teachers always made the guys who wore them turn the shirt inside out.

And not surprisingly, schools have always banned the shirts with beer advertisements, inflammatory racial or hate statements, and anything else with too much attitude printed on it.

But the young females who wear this new crop of shirts represent a much different twist.

Instead of arousing teenage boys with revealing outfits, girls are opting to titillate them with explicit messages that are specifically designed to set off raging hormones. No cleavage is shown or any other part of a bare body because it is the mind that is provoking the senses. In fact, many girls feel that they are not doing anything wrong because they don’t see themselves as the source of the distraction in the classroom. As a result, many feel that it is not their fault if a boy’s imagination runs wild with vivid images and thoughts.

Although plenty of the school girls who were interviewed by major media outlets insisted that the suggestive shirts that they wear have absolutely nothing to do with sex, such an assertion is sheer nonsense because the boys that were also interviewed were clearly aware of the sexual connotations. The boys agreed that the shirts immediately got their attention because of how explicit the messages were.

Now I do not necessarily want to condone such behavior but out of fairness I have to admit that is it is actually “natural” for girls to behave in a way to attract the attention of the opposite sex. However, it is the attraction in of itself and how it is done that will inevitably produce the negative and perhaps harmful results that should be of concern to parents as well as to school officials.

There are plenty of male classmates who know right from the beginning that they are being toyed with when they see girls who wear such suggestive shirts while the more outgoing sociable kids are more than happy to break the ice and flirt to see where it takes them.

However, it is the guys who are unaware of the social boundaries or who are simply confused by the mixed signals of these provocative shirts that can create problems. Add in a few perverts who don’t see the flirtatious aspect of the girl’s intentions and this situation can get messy real fast.

And potential problems are what a school wants to avoid, especially when they are sexual in nature.

But overall, it is the obligation of the education system to provide a learning environment that is free from these kinds of distractions. Such policies are no different than most workplaces because responsible adults expect to be able to work in a place free from undue sexual connotations so banning these shirts in a school setting is not an unrealistic expectation. School officials are doing the right thing in refusing to allow girls to wear the shirts on their campuses.

Yes, teenagers will still try to find wily ways to circumvent the system and perhaps it will always be so but schools must also maintain a level of vigilance to reduce the number of distractions as well as the most outrageous of behavior and clothing.
