The Raw Materials of our Civilization
This is the Roots of our Present Day Democracy

Review by Daniel Muniz

The first thing I have to say about Great Documents of Western Civilization is that it is absolutely exceptional.

Admittedly, its title is deceptive but looks have often been deceiving when it comes to great literature.

But most importantly, don’t expect a stale verbose textbook.

The author, Milton Viorst only includes the most important excerpts of western civilization’s most significant documents and provides concise and insightful commentary. He also examines the impact that each document had on the era it was published.

The real value of Viorst’s review of western heritage is that it gives the reader a vivid first hand glimpse of the raw materials that became the foundation of our civilization. This book illuminates the roots of emerging political and social systems that led to present day democracy and freedom as well as highlighting the decline and collapse of repression and tyranny.

Naturally, the author’s work is not all encompassing and it shouldn’t be. It is quick reading of western history done in a crisp and stimulating format.

Overall, this book is not necessarily intended for history buffs. Its witty informative nature is suitable for anyone especially those who are interested in learning more about the development of our basic freedoms and democracy.

This book belongs in your bookshelf.
